The Birthday that keeps on Going

Trevor is one lucky guy. Each year he gets to celebrate his Birthday over and over again. Saturday we had his (first for the year) Birthday party (but stay tuned--more parties to come). He invited a couple of his cousins, one friend from the bus, one girl from his church class, and one girl (his best friend) from school. Ben was teasing Trevor for inviting so many girls. I think Ben was just jealous. Trevor really wanted to go roller skating for his Birthday, but we weren't so sure 5 and 6 year olds would know how to roller skate, so we told him next year. So Chuck E. Cheese is always the back up. But we all had fun.

Almost Toothy

Here are a few pictures of Lydia--probably her last few that are without teeth. She has two about ready to pop through. I think pictures of toothless babies are so cute--once they get teeth they start looking so much older--which isn't bad, but it just means
they are growing up.

Fast, Faster, Fastest (& possibly the slowest)

Ben had his first Pinewood Derby race tonight. He picked out the design and then Grant and him cut it out. Ben did the rest by himself (sanding, painting, etc.). And then Grant got to help. He put "weights" on it to make it the heaviest it could be--all of 5 oz. He used quarters and dimes until it was just the right amount. Not wanting to cover Ben's art, he glued them to the bottom. We think we learned our lesson though--the bottom slowed it down. I think it got a bit high-centered. So it didn't go as fast as was intended.
Ben was great though. He didn't get down at all for...not coming in first, or second, or, well you get the picture. He enjoyed the whole process. At the end they asked what their inspiration was for the car that they made. Ben said that he thought it was going to be a race car, but it ended up being a money car (and then he showed everybody all of the money that was on the bottom)!

Trapped!

As part of Trevor's homework this week, he was supposed to make a leprechaun trap. Ben and Karmin thought they looked pretty cool, so they wanted to join in on the fun. We finished them last night for Family Home Evening. I think they turned out pretty cute. Trevor is still convinced that leprechauns are real. He was asking a bunch of questions about them. One of Trevor's favorite movies when he was little(r) was Darby O'Gill and the Little People. So we referred him to that movie--saying they're small, you get to make 3 wishes if you catch one, etc. We finally took all of the fun out of it by breaking the bad news to him that leprechauns are not real. But what do we know? He still is talking about when we catch a leprechaun and on and on. I guess he just doesn't want to think that they don't exist.
Ben had the whole Santa thing figured out right after he turned 4. And he figured it out all on his own. (He noticed that on one of the gifts Santa gave him had the same wrapping paper that we had.) Trevor hasn't begun to even question it. I think it is 2 totally different personalities. One is analytical and observant (and probably too smart). The other has an imagination that never ends and loves to Believe. Well, I guess we'll just have to see what we catch tonight!If you can't tell, Trevor's has a rock wall that the leprechaun can climb to get to the gold, but will fall in the box at the top when he gets the gold. Ben and Karmin have the same design. A golden path leads the leprechaun to the pot of gold, but when he picks up the pot of gold, the trap (which is a box disguised as a cloud) is released and it falls on top of him

The Quilt that Everyone Else Made

Okay, so you know about the dress that I made Karmin--well, I guess sewing to save money was not an isolated incident.
I was looking through a Pottery Barn Kids magazine (a long time ago) and saw the most adorable bedspread that I thought would be perfect for Karmin. I was pretty sure that I could make it for a lot cheaper than it was in the magazine. So I recruited my mom to help me. We went and picked out the fabric and then about a year and a half later (yea, it took me a while to find the motivation to get it done), my mom came over and helped me get it sewn together in a day. And since it had been about 15 years since I had sewn anything, realize who was REALLY sewing it.
Then I took it to a lady to have it quilted--again not me.
Next came the binding. I think my mom knew that if she didn't do it herself, it probably would have been left undone. So my mom made the binding strips. And then my sister happened to come into town, and so she did most of the hand sewing of the binding.
I finally finished the binding last week. Once I learned how to do it correctly, it only took me a couple of nights to get it done. And actually that was my favorite part.

Grant and I gave the quilt to Karmin for Christmas (before I was able to put the binding on it). She thought (and possibly still thinks) that Grandma gave her the quilt. So that is proof that really, I shouldn't be taking credit for this one. But here is the finished product. I think it is pretty cute. If it hard to see, the stitching design are butterflies.

Time's Flying

The other day someone asked me how old Lydia was, and I told them 7 1/2 months. Later I realized that I had missed her 8 month mark. I know February is a short month, but it seemed to fly by--I didn't realize that it was over and we were into March.
Lydia and I got through her rice cereal experience and went straight to applesauce. She has been doing really well with it. Once she is over her cold I will start her on squash.
This month, Lydia accomplished this:

That's right she is finally sleeping in a bed. I began to think that we would have to transfer her to a stroller and have her sleep there.
